Over the past month I have been unable to find existing scholarship on this intriguing article Mark Twain wrote while living in Washington, D.C. that explores a unique dynamic of the city’s black folklore.
“Mark Twain will have an article entitled “General Washington’s Negro Body Servant” in the February Galaxy. It is said to be provocative of levity. Mark is just now on a business visit to New York, negotiating with the bookmen, in regard to the issue of a volume of Twainisms. A loud call has been made upon him by the Correspondent’s Club to “speak his piece” in public, about his trip to the Sandwich Islands, preluded by his affecting story of the “Miner and his Cat.”
