“When General Washington was on his deathbed, he rolled his eyes and said, ‘Forever keep the niggers down.’ This bit of psuedo-history passing from generation to generation is accepted as undoubtedly true by many, if not most, of the colored people over a wide area.” [1]

In his last will and testament, written before his death, Washington gave explicit and detailed instructions that the slaves he owned outright would be manumitted upon his wife’s death. See Henry Wieneck’s An Imperfect God: George Washington, His Slaves, and the Creation of America. (2003).
