5th & Indiana Ave NWAccording to Brian Kraft, DC Building Permits database expert, 501 D STREET, the Subway sandwich shop today (across from the courthouse) was built in 1840 and first owned by “Hellen, Johnson.” In the winter of 1867 – 1868 if you walked west on D Street NW, at the northeast corner of 6th Street was the Police Court Building which Twain visited on a handful of occasions to cover city crime.

Of Twain’s five moves at least two were in the immediate neighborhood of 501 D Street NW.

Next door, at 503 D Street NW, is the former law office of Daniel Webster, who Twain at one time adored.
